What is wireless Internet access?
Wireless Internet is high-speed Internet without the use of telephone lines. High frequency radio waves are used to connect you to the Spectrum Sciences network. This radio frequency (RF) connection is facilitated through our network of access points throughout Southern Maryland. Speeds are many times faster than modems.

How much does the equipment and installation cost?
The installation charge varies depending on your plan. Additional equipment may be needed depending on the location of your property. Spectrum Sciences will do a free site survey of the location to determine what equipment may be necessary.

Who installs the equipment?
Because the equipment is highly technical and FCC regulations for installing and pointing the antenna are very stringent, a certified installation technician must professionally install the equipment on the property and uninstall equipment upon terminating service.

Is this Satellite Internet?
No, this technology is known as fixed wireless. There are no satellites involved. Your Internet connection is received from our access point antennas that are located on communication towers and tall buildings in the Southern Maryland area.

Can anyone get wireless service?
This depends on the location of your residence or building. If you are within our coverage area you could be surfing the net with wireless soon! Some areas might need additional equipment depending upon the location and distance between you and the our closest access point. A free site survey will be conducted to determine what equipment will be needed.

Is this wireless access available to business as well as residential?
Yes. We have supplied many local businesses with wireless Internet access since 1998 and have decided to expand our service area to the residential community.

How secure is wireless Internet?
There are many misconceptions and "rumors" about the lack of security of wireless Internet. Here are the facts: The signal is "open air" meaning anyone with a laptop and a wireless card can potentially connect to our service, however, they must be activated on our network before they can actually do anything or "get anywhere". It is somewhat similar to a cellular phone. You my possess a cellular phone that will pick up a signal, but unless you have activated the phone with a cellular carrier, you can not do anything with it. Another issue is wireless encryption. Wireless ISP's do not use encryption. This is not unusual - it is standard operating procedure. Keep in mind that the Internet is a "public" network. Once data leaves your computer and gets to the Internet, your information is out "in the open" for anyone to see. This is true for cable, DSL, wireless, and even dialup. The security of your Internet connection is attained by using a firewall and by using the secure socket layer (SSL) features of your web browser.
